Artology 2: Artist Lucian Crump and Shoe Horns

Published in community by J. Nathan Corbitt

Art from Shoe HornsThe Artology camp is in full swing with kids arriving as early as 7:30, excited and ready to explore natural biology and create art. Charlene Melhorn, BuildaBridge Community Driector explains it this way:

Today, like each morning, we began with our drum circle. Miss Janet taught us the names and cultures of each of drum. Afterwards, we learned about germs... yuck! We are going to grow our own bacteria and see just how dirty our hands can be and how important it is to wash our hands. (Hours later the students could be heard in the bathroom singing: "Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday..." a way to remember how long to wash their hands) We also learned the parts of the microscope and got to practice using it and looking at prepare slides of fly mouth parts, honeycombs, hair, etc. After refueling for lunch we headed to the board room where we looked and and discussed slides of artists three artists, Trashformaciones (two brothers from Spain), Chakaia Booker, and Willie Cole; all artists who use found and recycled objects and transform them into beautiful works of art. Also while in the board/conference room we practice our business posture and today one of the girls exclaimed, "I like this room, it makes me feel like a lawyer!"

Slides are great, but using our hands is better. We headed to the basement where each of our five groups were given a set of recycled objects to begin to arrange in a mandala pattern.

Loretta Crump shares about the work of the late Lucian CrumpWe were just getting into it when it was time to head to the gallery where Loretta Crump told about her late husband, Lucien Crump and described his Legacy and how they would become a part of it by showing their work at his gallery. Our students asked lots of questions and spent time looking at the many paintings in the gallery. Lastly, we headed over the empty gallery to view the space where we would be showing - to get ideas and incentive to make our best work!

There will be a reception of student work at the gallery August 3, 6-9PM. The exhibit will be open for public viewing August 3-17.
