Artology 3: Sculptures and Snakeskins

Published in community by J. Nathan Corbitt

Out in the WoodsEach morning begins with a drum circle to steady the excitement and focus for work. Then it is out to the woods. This day visiting Artist Pedro Ospino talks about Native

American traditions and helps create an installation honoring Mother Nature. Then towards the end he pulls out a pouch with a special offering of snake skin. Headed back to the classroom there are reflective drawings in journals... just in time to miss the heavy rain!

Biology is important also and the group visits the Morris Arboretum where tour guides inform the group about seed formation and pollination. After enjoying a picnic lunch there is a short lesson on color mixing, and then exploring in the breath taking rose garden. Many gasps are heard as children find colors and flowers that meet their particular taste and jolts their senses.

They exclaim "Wow!" and "This is heaven!" In their groups they sit down to study and draw. The rain clouds gather, but hold off while the children roll down the hill as a reward for their excellent behavior... and then back for a snack and journaling.
