Artist on Call: Diaspora of Hope
Published in international, Guatemala, Artists On Call by Tegan Brozyna
BuildaBridge is coordinating a Diaspora of Hope Artist on Call program this Thanksgiving in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Portau Prince, Haiti and Nairobi, Kenya. November 22-30, 3-5 teams, including 10 artists each, will partner with mirror teams in every point of destination to bring wholeness and transformation to 50-100 underserved youth.
Through Diaspora of Hope, children who have previously had little to no access to the arts and who have experienced distressing life experiences are able to reclaim a sense of purpose and worth as well as an artistic voice. The inspiration for the Diaspora of Hope Artist on Call program began with a pilot effort during Thanksgiving 2007. Last November, an art camp occurred at Vidas Plenas a supplemental school for 250 children living in La Limonada, a slum community in Guatemala City. The response to this experience among the volunteers and the staff as well as the children of Vidas Plenas was so transformative, that BuildaBridge decided to expand the model and extend the opportunity to three locations in 2008. In time, it is hoped that this service at Thanksgiving will be widespread around the globe.
So how can you serve? Join one of the teams heading to Guatemala, Haiti and Kenya (it's not too late!); make a cash donation to BuildaBridge designated for the Diaspora of Hope Artist on Call program; identify others, especially artists, who may be interested in participating and share the opportunity; or sponsor a participant.
