Diaspora of Hope 2008

On November 21, twenty-six (26) artists from the US, Thaliand and even Rwanda will disperse around the globe joining as many as 30 local artists in Kenya, Haiti and Guatemala to work with as many as 300 children in a Diaspora of Hope. Volunteering their time and donating the costs through the support of friends and family members, these Artists on Call will engage children in art-making that explores the meaning of hope in their lives and communities.
While the immediate goal is to bring hope and healing to these children who live in "slum" communities of their representative countries, the long-term goal is to assist local organizations to engage and train local artists in service to disenfranchised communities, and to build capacity and sustainability for their local programs. We didn’t have the proper party we were hoping for when we finished the mural today. Today the men made us lunch. It was a nice surprise! Two fries eggs with beans and a lot of bread. One of the chaplains who translates for us was excited to take several photos of me eating it. One or two chaplains sit with the men every day. While I am here they are my guides and guards.The men who gather to watch the mural process learned my name today. I only know four of them by name

One opinion is that these guys aren't a good use of our resources, which
would be better spent in poor villages with people who aren't murdering people. </
