Philosophy

BuildaBridge is committed to:

  • Bringing compassion, hope, justice and reconciliation through service to others in communities at home and throughout the world.
  • Bridging barriers of race, class, faith and culture through the transformative power of the arts.
  • Teaching life skills and promoting holistic personal, family and community development through cross-cultural and arts-integrated programming.

BuildaBridge believes the creative arts are a common gift to humankind. The arts perform a valuable role within society to transform, teach, heal, encourage and empower. When engaged in service to others, the creative arts are functional tools used to bring peace, wholeness and healing to the tough places of the world - to the neighborhood at home and abroad.

We strengthen communities by equipping artists to cross cultural boundaries in service to others. Also, we believe people can be transformed holistically when the arts are part of healing. A complete description of our philosophy can be read in the book Taking it to the Streets: Using the Arts to Transform Your Community by J. Nathan Corbitt and Vivian Nix-Early (Baker Books 2003), co-founders of BuildaBridge. The book, funded by the Louisville Institute, is based upon a research project that included 61 interviews with artists in 16 US cities.
