leah and friend.jpgAre you interested in hosting an Arts for Hope or Arts for Peace camp as part of Diaspora of Hope?  Organizations are invited to request a team of BuildaBridge Artists on Call to serve in the community you serve.  Read basic guidelines below.

What a local organization says about DOH
  • "The organization went well, we were able to connect easily and without much trouble."
  • "The guest [Artists on Call] team easily blended and showed great respect to the [local community.] This, more than anything, made this event successful."
  • "[BuildaBridge] communicated well about the expectations of the camp and that set the standards high for those who were joining for the first time ( host team) this is something that they really appreciated."
  • "We were able to draw [our] group together in a unique way, the lessons that were being taught to the children also applied to [our] artist themselves, issues of discipline in time, having clear goals, valuing our community and hope within ourselves and for our community."
  • "The impact was both ways, to the children and the teachers alike."

Process and Guidelines for Hosting Diaspora of Hope:

Mission

Our mission is to bring hope and healing through therapeutic art-making to children in the toughest places of the world.  This includes after-school programs and children's programs in refugee camps, slums, orphanages, and other places where children are suffering from trauma as a result of extreme poverty, violence, or catastrophe.

Provide

  1. Recruit and establish a local team of artists who are willing and able to volunteer their time in both preparation for and teaching the Arts for Hope Camp in collaboration with a visiting team of artists.
  2. Provide a location for the camp that is as conducive to learning as is possible. BuildaBridge will make suggestions and help in selecting an appropriate place.
  3. Provide at least one meal a day for the children and all participating artist teachers and assistants.
  4. Provide for translators.
  5. Organize and facilitate meetings of local artists prior to DOH.
  6. Prepare for a one-day training that is held one day prior to the first day of camp.
  7. Review and learn the Ars for Hope curriculum provided by BuildaBridge.
  8. Assist the DOH coordinator in selecting a safe and inexpensive housing for Artists on Call.  This is paid for by the visiting artist.

What you should know about BuildaBridge Diaspora of Hope (DOH) Artists on Call (AOC)

  1. All DOH AOC raise their own support and volunteer their time for the project.
  2. DOH AOC pay for their airfare, housing, all meals outside of the camp, and transportation to and from the camp.  This is coordinated by BuildaBridge.
  3. While some AOC will speak the local language, most only work in English.  They are from different nationalities and ethnicities.
  4. All artists have completed basic training with BuildaBridge and are aware of the potential risks and dangers in difficult places.
  5. BuildaBridge is an ecumenical organization and as such does not proselytize or conduct worship services. While AOC artists hold to different religious beliefs, they are committed to the core values of BuildaBridge of love, hope, justice, peace, reconciliation and service to others and they respect the local faith and religious tradition of the host organization.
