Community Studio
Image

BuildaBridge proposes to develop part of the BuiildaBridge House property, the Carriage House, into a functioning pottery, ceramic, and art studio space called the Community Studio. The impetus for this idea has come from a need to maintain ongoing relationships with youth and families whom we meet and serve in transitional contexts. The Community Studio is to be a community-based pottery & art studio that will offer art-making & therapeutic art experiences to community youth & families for the purpose of their holistic development. The Community Studio will:

  • Create a place for art-making, education and healing in the community where BI resides
  • Create a place for on-going relationship building with kids from transitional contexts
  • Create a revenue stream to support the charitable work of BI
  • Create a public "face" for BI

Phase I. Partial Renovation Work Already Completed

In 2003 we discovered a number of structural problems with the Carriage House. These problems included a crumbling back wall and outdated insulation in the ceiling. We took three renovation procedures.

First, we removed all existing materials from the garage and removed outdated insulation. We then installed new 9" fiberglass insulation.

Second, our contractor installed several steel beams and starbolts to support the structure, which appeared to be separating.

Finally, we concreted the back outside wall that faces our neighbor's property, thus tightening the structure further. We still need a coat of stucco and window replacements.

The Carriage House

As you drive up Tulpehocken Street and pass the BuildaBridge House, nestled in the back is an old carriage house. (see center below)

Eighteen feet by thirty-two feet in dimension and two stories tall, the space now hosts a lovely one bedroom apartment on the second story and a garage on the ground floor.

Entrances to the ground floor are through a side door behind the steps, with wide garage doors on both sides.
